UMBRA — Tokyo

“UMBRA” received the Tokyo Tokyo Award at the 1minute Projection Mapping Competition / TOKYO LIGHTS 2023 — a study in shadow, reflection and revelation on the competition façade.

A façade in Tokyo lit in red and orange by a projection mapping in which two giant hands reach in from either side towards a figure drawn in light inside a circle Loads the player from Vimeo (do-not-track mode).

“UMBRA” was RE:SORB’s 2023 entry to the 1minute Projection Mapping Competition at TOKYO LIGHTS, one year after the studio’s Jury Prize there for “MUTATE / EVOLVE” — and received the Tokyo Tokyo Award.

A study in shadow and revelation: faces, textures and architecture surface out of darkness on the competition façade and sink back into it — documented here in the festival cut.

UMBRA is a façade mapping: the content is built to the geometry of the building, so its columns, windows and rooflines carry the image. On the competition façade, a giant face emerges from golden light.

RE:SORB had taken a prize at an earlier edition of the competition too: the Audience Award in Japan in 2019, for a mapping on the keep of Odawara Castle.
